From Empfingen to Bludenz, Austria

Finally we are on the road: after a month of last preparations we managed to leave Empfingen on 5 September 2012 at around noon time.

We are now in Bludenz, Austria, for a rest day and plan to climb our first real mountain tomorrow, the Arlberg.

But let me start from the beginning: So far we are really lucky. The weather is excellent, with a lot of sunshine and no rain so far. The mornings and evenings are a bit chilly, which makes us go to bed early, but also makes it difficult to rise early (while late for us at the moment means between 7/7.30h). I hope we’ll get used to it, since it might get colder the coming weeks. The route we chose is beautiful: we only ride on side roads with none to little traffic or on bike paths. The landscape is beautiful, most people are super nice and our lunch breaks are most interesting and the best way to meet locals since most of them would talk and ask what we are doing (I think none of them believes us). One even came out of her house to offer us water, her bathroom….Another one was less helpful, she showed us a way through an inaccessible forest with steep pathways, but we managed somehow.

Other good news is that my backache is gone. The bad news is that our knees start hurting from all the mountains we are climbing, which at least makes us rest every once in a while. And tomorrow we will have to climb the first pass, the Arlberg.

By the way: FAQs part II are cancelled, given the fact that we hardly find internet connection (I am sitting now at the McDonalds where we have Internet for free). So I will continue writing and preparing on the camping or whenever time allows and then we’ll upload everything as soon as we are online. I am still planning to post at least once per week to keep you all updated.

And here are a few impressions and statistics from our trip so far: in four days we cycled a total of 277 km and passed three countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). We climbed numerous hills and mountains (highest elevation 833m, Hoechsten, close to the lake of Constance, see picture above). Don’t laugh, this was really hard with all the luggage we are carrying: Johan’s bags weigh 30 kg, mine  19 kg and on top we carry 2-3 liters of water, our food we buy every day and don’t forget the bikes of around 15 kg and the locks. But so far so good, we managed to climb most of the hills on the bikes and had to walk only a few times.

I actually also wanted to post some photos within this blog post, but stupid wordpress doesn’t let me do it this time. This really annoys me. Will try and post photos differently in the future.

That’s it for today, I have to leave now to prepare dinner, since it is getting dark shortly. Next time I’ll hope to be able to post some of Johan’s nice videos.

Good night everybody, we are looking forward to your comments.

Baerbel and Johan
